The dangers of comparison

How many times have you looked at someone and thought ‘how are they doing it so well yet I am struggling’? This dangerous comparison is something that is exasperated even more once you become a Mum. Why isn’t my baby sleeping through but theirs is? Why is their baby having 25oz a day but mine is only having 20oz? Why is their baby crawling but mine hasn’t even attempted to move? I believe that this ‘comparison generation’ has been created due to social media. Now, don’t get me wrong, I share a lot of pictures on Facebook and Instagram so I know I’m guilty of this, but I am very aware, on reflection, that people only share the good bits of their day/life and that is unrealistic.

When you look at photos and videos you have to take it with a pinch of salt and start to think about the tantrums and the crying that would have happened that day. That one smile was probably a 1 minute glimpse of calm in their day that they wanted to share and remember. It doesn’t mean people aren’t struggling, it just means that what they post isn’t their outlet to vent about their frustrations, but rather a platform for them to share the bits they want to keep as their memories.

I have tried to make sure that on this blog I share the realistic side of motherhood as well as the positives (of which there are many), but I want to remember a true reflection of my first few weeks of motherhood so I can see the challenges I have overcome and the obstacles I have navigated.
